"Fettisdagen" or "Fat Tuesday"
March turned to be one of my favorite months for may reasons. The first reason is that the spring is just around the corner and that’s mean a lot of free vitamin D or bright sun is around and the day is longer. But also because a lot of seasonal treats are celebrated in March 😊
So, the 1st march was the Fettisdagen (a.k.a The Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday). In that day the Swedish people consume a lot of “Semla” and at least one Semla on that day. The story behind the Semla is that the Christians eat Semla the day just before the start of lent which is the observance before easter. Swedes have been gobbling up these sweet buns since the 16th century when they were served on Fettisdagen. For more explanation it was the last treat before the begging of lent of the Christian fast which is last for 40 days of fasting.
Most of the bakeries start to sell Semla even as two months or more earlier than the Fettisdagen. And the good and beautiful thing is that you can find your delicious Semla the way you want, like if you are Vegan or Vegetarian. For me, I found it as a good opportunity to go out with my classmates to enjoy the beautiful weather and the super delicious Semla over a fika time 😉 as a break from the study stress.
Semla is not the only thing you can enjoy in March, but the coming one is “våffeldagen” or the waffle day! Waffles are usually eaten all year around, but in 24 march is a particular day where they celebrate it. The so interesting thing is that the Swedish waffles are fatter than the normal Belgian waffle and are basically made in a special shape <3 ( a heart shape). So, I am looking forward to that day as well! as I believe I will not only enjoy the delicious waffles but also the longer day and good weather 😊
