Having a bike to move around is essential in Linköping.

You could always walk and take the bus but the bike path network is really efficient to get somewhere whenever you want. For instance, from where I live to Studenthuset, it would take me 30min. by bus (5min. on the bus and 25min. walking), 45min. by walking or a mere 13min. by bike.

I have to say that biking in Linköping is way more comfortable than biking on the small and crowded streets of Paris. Here, bikes are mixed with pedestrians on large roads, and you will almost never cross a street with cars. And if you are not a great cyclist, don’t worry and ask around, your classmates or corridor-mates will happily lend you a hand till you get more comfortable!

Let’s get back to the subject: winter biking.

Is it possible to bike in winter?

  • Yes absolutely!

What should I wear to bike in winter?

  • It is quite similar to walking outside in negative temperatures: you will definitely need a good pair of gloves, a warm hat, ankle-covering socks and a big scarf! As for the coat, it should be warm: you might be a bit cold when you start your commute, but pedalling will warm you up really fast!
  • If it snows, a raincoat/rainpants to keep you dry and a cap so that you don’t get snowflakes in your eyes!
  • I would also recommend wearing a helmet in case you slide and fall, but it is not mandatory in Sweden.

What equipment should I have on my bike?

  • The bike needs to have lights, both front and back, as well as wheel reflectors (it also needs a bell). I would add a reflective vest as the dark winter nights will easily hide you from other cyclists and cars.
  • A saddle cover so that you can keep your behind dry.
  • If you don’t want to stay on the main bike paths, you might need good tires.

Other tips

  • Be careful when you change from one bike path to another as there might be uncleared snow dumps on the intersections.
  • Get up a bit earlier in case your bike locks are frozen (and pour hot water on them).
  • When temperatures go under 0°C, leave your gear on a middle speed. You don’t want to be stuck on the hardest one for 2 weeks straight, believe me!
  • There might be ice near the bike racks!

Have fun and keep biking!

[Update]
It has been snowing for 2 days straight, so even the main paths weren’t cleared yesterday as it was still snowing. It is still possible to use them, but the snow makes you slower. And pedal brakes are awesome too when your bike is full of snow!
