After a very stressful week of writing an examination paper for our last course, my friends and I did a short weekend trip to Stockholm before our next course started. I had already spent one day in Stockholm at the beginning of November as I already told you in one of my previous blogs. But visiting Stockholm in December during the Christmas period is something else.

This time the whole city was covered in snow. We actually had luck with the weather. It was quite cold, but it wasn’t snowing, so we were able to enjoy all the Christmas decorations in the streets. A hat and gloves were still very much necessary. We of course also visited the Gamla Stan Christmas Market. It’s a cute little market with a couple of different stands. They sell clothing, jewellery, sweets and some of course also sell Glögg. Glögg is typical Swedish Christmas drink which basically is hot red wine, liquor and spices like cinnamon.

If you have some spear time and maybe want to get out of the cold, I recommend the Natural History Museum. It’s a 15-minute metro ride from the central station to the ‘Universitet’ station from where you can walk to the museum. The entrance is free and there are many different exhibits to discover – dinosaurs, human evolution, nature and some others. It is a family friendly museum with a lot of playful ways to learn for children. It’s still very fun to go through them, read up on all these topics and also play the games of course.

We also visited the Vasa Museum. With 170 SEK the entrance is quite high when you are living off of a student budget. However, it is definitely worth a visit. I had been to the Museum many years ago with my family. But as I was still pretty young then, I forgot many things, so it was nice to go back as an adult and really understand the history behind it. There is of course a lot of information on how the Vasa was build and how it sunk on its maiden voyage. I also found the information on how the ship was recovered and its preservation ever since very interesting as well.

Obviously, I also had to do some shopping for Christmas presents and that is no easy task on the Sunday of the second advent. Many others had the same idea, but I was successful, and I am fully equipped to go home for Christmas by the end of the week.

All the best,

Emily
