There are many career options open after finishing a master’s degree at LiU (or any other university) – some of you might enter the workforce straight away and others cannot quite quit studying just yet. Whilst starting all over with a new degree might not be the most logical choice, becoming a PhD student could be.

When starting my master’s thesis at a research group at LiU (biomedical field), I was not yet sure about how to continue. The longer I worked in the lab, the more I fell in love with the work and the topic. As I knew that a PhD student recently finished and the group will be applying for research funding soon, I took my chance and asked whether they will be offering positions anytime soon. And lucky me, they were thinking about me as a potential new PhD student!

This might be the best-case scenario for getting a PhD position at LiU. And I cannot lie, the competition is there, but every year more PhD students are admitted! So, keep your hopes up! 🙂

If you do not know anyone on the inside, I can recommend checking the list of vacancies at LiU here. Also, there is the possibility of writing speculative applications to research groups that you find interesting. In my opinion it is worth it to invest time into reading some recent publications of the research group and writing a tailored motivational letter. This increases your chances of being noticed and finding a good fit!

If you have found a PhD position in the medical field, I can recommend checking out DOMFIL. It is a group of postgraduate students of the Medical Faculty at LiU with the aim of improving education and your professional network. They are also organizing events, like the IUPAC Women’s breakfast (check it out here) where I have participated in once.

In general, I can say, that I highly appreciate the academic environment in Sweden, and it is one of the top countries to do a PhD in!

Good luck with your applications!

Iris
