Preparing for a student visa can be quite challenging for some of you. Especially if you are first time apply for a student visa. For me, it is my first time applying for a student visa but I have applied for a tourist visa several times.

Do they have the same procedure and requirements? Of course not at all!

It takes more time and patience, follows the process step by step, and  I believe you can do it!

So after received the acceptance announcement from LiU. I discussed it carefully with my whole family because at that time I fired from my school due to Covid 19 condition and my mom receives her retirement letter after work for more than 26 years as a civil servant. So of course, our financial situation was not stable back at that time. The first time, I checked the website of Migrationsverket.

https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/Studying-and-researching-in-Sweden.html

then to check how to apply (procedure and requirement) same for EU/EEA/Mobility student/or for less than three month

https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/Studying-and-researching-in-Sweden/Higher-education.html

for EU Work, study or live in Sweden for EU citizens follow this link

https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/EU-citizens-and-long-term-residents/Work-study-or-live-in-Sweden-for-EU-citizens.html

for Non-EU you can click residence permit for studies in higher education

My recommendation is read carefully and take an important note for (Please to check again, I just write several parts from the Migrationsverket website) the requirements such as :

  1. Copies of your passport that show personal data, signature, period of validity (check how to take proper scanning before you send it)
  2. Admission decision that says that you get accepted from the higher education organizer in Sweden
  3. A copy of documents that show that you have, or have applied for, a comprehensive health insurance policy that is valid in Sweden. The international student will get it from the university as part of their fees, please check again to the international office for further information.
  4. A bank account statement that verifies that you have sufficient funds for your living expenses. You need to check if it is possible to take your money when you out of your country. In my case this the reason why it took a long time for them to accept my application * tips: check the foreign currency regularly. I also need to verify some amount of money that I received was given from my parents and sister for living cost purposes.
  5. Able to pay a possible fee for the application with a credit card or charge card. I received a scholarship (100% from LiU), so I just need to show the paper announcement from the LiU website.

You can use E-service to upload and fill all the forms that send directly to Migrationsverket. You will require to make an account with your active email.

You need also to pay for the application process before you send the form (check https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/Studying-and-researching-in-Sweden/Fees.html)

After that, you will get your control number to check your document. Don’t worry if the migration office needs more documents they will contact you through email and explain what they need. However, make sure you give all important documents so it will not take more time to process them. I applied around three months before my plan to arrive in Sweden, which is in my case it was too short and I was a little bit worried if they reject my application. You can contact Swedish Embassy in your country to make sure everything

During preparation, I joined with Indonesia Student Association in Sweden and communicate with staff from the Embassy of Sweden in Indonesia to make sure all the requirements. I was trying to do little research about living costs in Sweden especially in the Linkoping area, read student blogs, follow LiU Instagram, and discussed a lot with Indonesian students who live in Sweden.

Wish luck to all of you, in part two I will tell you what process that I need to do after……
