Feeling like a real scientist in the Lab at LiU

In the end, the decision to study at Linköping University impacted my life more than expected. Not only did I experience a different culture and a way of learning, but it also opened my eyes to the international possibilities in the job market.

Before going on my ERASMUS + exchange year I was determined to get a job in Austria. At that time, spending a year abroad in Sweden seemed enough to satisfy my curiosity for an international environment. No need to say, that this decision drastically cuts down my career options in the field of science. However, being exposed to different nationalities during my Master’s thesis internship at a research group at Linköping University, showed me how many different groups and research environments exist all over Europe.

How exactly did your career choices change, you might ask. Hearing about different trainee programmes in Europe captured my curiosity and I started to look for PhD and Research Assistant positions abroad. For those of you, that are also interested in jobs in the biomedical field I can recommend Research Gate and LinkedIn job alerts, as well as Twitter. Following research groups and interesting scientists on Twitter might open up opportunities you would otherwise not have  thought about.

I hope that this inspires you too, to leave your comfort zone behind and embark on a new adventure. Maybe abroad and maybe even at Linköping University, where it all started for me!

Yours,
Iris
