Hi everyone!

Are you curious to find out about a very serious and delicious annual day celebrated in Sweden every 4th of October?

Well, it is all about the Cinnamon Bun, the signature baked good that I am sure you have tried already if you are in Sweden, or that you will for sure taste once you arrive here. Cinnamon buns are very popular during the coffee breaks, which are called “fika” in Sweden. Getting a warm cup of coffee or tea and something sweet is very popular to the Swedes and one of the sweet options is the cinnamon buns.

In fact, Swedes like this sweet baked good so much that they celebrated it every year on the 4th of October on an annual day the so-called “kanelbullens dag”. It all started back in 1999 by the Home Baking Council (Hembakningsrådet) as an attempt to create a baking tradition (Source: THE LOCAL se).

According to Birgit Nilsson Bergström, project manager at the Home Baking Council, “we wanted to celebrate home-baking, so we talked with various bakers, teachers, and just all sorts of ordinary people, and we asked what bread they thought of when they thought of home-baking. And that was it” (Source: THE LOCAL se).

The day is so well advertised that all cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, and convenience stores promote their products and offers for that special date. Cinnamon buns are very tasty, and I love them. I am indeed a sweet tooth person, but even if I was not, I think it is hard not to like them. They are sweet, but not extremely and the coziness of the cinnamon is the perfect autumn and winter smell. Compared to the American cinnamon roll, the Swedish cinnamon bun is not as sticky and sweet. Another secret ingredient is the cardamom spice in the dough, which brings its flavor to another level.

The best cinnamon buns are the ones sold in local bakeries baked in very good quality ingredients. Nearby my apartment, there is a small café bakery and of course, they have baked their own versions. I could not resist, and I have queued very patiently to buy some cinnamon buns and celebrate the day.

I know that this blog post comes after the annual day of celebrating cinnamon buns and it is never too late to go grab one and enjoy with your fika!!!

Do let me know in the comments down below if you have ever tried or if I made you curious and you wish to try as soon as possible.
